The Miami Open brings ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tennis to Miami Gardens in Florida. It is the second part of the familiar March hard-court pairing with Indian Wells. The two tournaments share a place in the calendar, but their weather and setting should not be treated as interchangeable.
The move to Hard Rock Stadium
The event began in 1985 and moved to the Hard Rock Stadium site for the 2019 edition. Earlier Miami tournaments were played elsewhere, including the long Key Biscayne period. The current venue did not become its home in 2000.
A modern guide needs that distinction because photographs, transport advice and memories from the Key Biscayne era refer to a different site.
What the competition involves
Both tours have their own singles and doubles competitions. The men’s event belongs to the Masters 1000 series; the women’s belongs to WTA 1000. Neither draw is a fifth Grand Slam.
Qualifying, main-draw dates and session schedules are not identical concepts. Consult the current edition’s information before deciding which day offers the tennis you want to see.
Conditions to watch
Outdoor heat, humidity and wind can influence play. Watch serve location, return depth and the player’s ability to recover between wide balls. A change in conditions can require a different margin above the net or a different return position.
Comparing the same player at Indian Wells and Miami can be revealing: apparently similar hard-court events may demand different choices. Avoid attributing every result to a single court-speed label.
The Sunshine Double
Winning Indian Wells and Miami in the same season is called the Sunshine Double. It requires sustained performance across separate tournaments rather than a single extended draw.
To follow the achievement, check the player, tour and season. A general guide should not mix men’s and women’s champions into one unlabelled list or imply a partial historical list is complete.
Before attending
Use the official site for ticket access, transport, permitted items and the daily order of play. A centre-court seat and access to outside courts can involve different conditions. Allow for the grounds experience as well as the stadium match.
